 The West Pier at Whitby, seen early on a mid summer morning before the sun has burned off the sea fret. The Beach is deserted, and early risers are taking a brisk walk along the Pier. 4 hours later the weather was baking hot, the beach packed and ice cream queues snaked along the Quayside.Whitby harbour is situated at the mouth of the River Esk, with a total area of about 80 acres. The arms of the entrance piers extend out to sea in a northerly direction leaving the entrance exposed to strong winds from north west through north to north east and sheltered from other directions.
