Scarborough has two bays and North Bay is much more rugged than the gentle contours of the South.
The town is much further above the beach here and the esplanade is wider with large concrete walls to keep the sea at bay. The waves are much wilder here in North Bay and on a stormy day the water comes right over the road in spectacular displays of white breakers.
On a really rough day it can be quite dangerous but at high tide in any weather the sea can still splash the unwary Ð great fun for the nimble who can skip up the slope and watch others get wet.
